The Great Barrier Reef

We headed out for the Reef early in the morning from Cairns.

We went to the inner reef at a place called Fitzroy Island.  This is nice since there is a beach and some activities to do between snorkeling.

The boat ride was 45 minutes, which is nice for people who get a little queasy on the sea.

On the way, we passed by Paul Allen's megayacht, "Octopus".  Not bad for $160 million...

As soon as we got there, we went to the Turtle Rehabilitation Center, where they nurse injured turtles back to health.  This turtle was named Ava and had a cracked shell.  It recovered for 18 months in the center and lucky for us it was the big day to be released back into the ocean.

After the release, we went on a glass bottomed boat tour.  The reef was nice to see, but there wasn't a lot of fish since it was midday.

After lunch on the beach, we out in our stinger suits, snorkels, and masks to check out the reef.  The colours under the water were gorgeous, and there were many different kinds of colourful tropical fish.

I tried to take some underwater pictures with the gopro, but it was hard to get it aligned with the mask, so many of them are not looking at the right thing.

Cathy went out after me with the camera and got some good movies, including one with a shark!

The water was calm and clear, and there was a little bit of cloud, which was nice to keep the sun off, but made the colours a little muted.

After the snorkeling, we relaxed on the beach for a bit.  Trent swam out to the water trampoline for a few bounces, and the boat was ready to go.

After we got back, we grabbed dinner in Cairns, and went back to the hotel for a good sleep.
