Dolphin kayaking and Rainbow Beach day one

This morning we woke up to a gorgeous sunny and warm day.  Looks like the clouds and rain are gone with Steve (at least for now).  We got up early to meet in "downtown" Rainbow Beach to go kayaking with Epic Ocean Adventures. It was a 20 minute drive down the beach highway in a 4x4 to Double Island Point where we put the kayaks in.  We saw a pod of dolphins in the water on the drive so we knew they were out there and we knew what to look for.

It was pretty wavy, but not too bad and we managed to get out past the breaks pretty easily.  We paddled along the coastline with some awesome rocks and crashing waves, looking for the dolphins.  We tried a few places, looking for turtles too.  After an hour or so of searching, we saw some fins beyond the waves and paddled out to meet them.

The first group had 5-6 including a little baby, about a foot and a half long.  While we watched them, another bigger pod of maybe 20 or so came through feeding.  It was amazing!  They were diving and blowing looking for fish and swimming and surfacing just feet from the kayaks.  We could have almost touched them!

They swam around us for 15 or 20 minutes and a third pod raced by looking for food.

Very cool!

Here is a video of some of our fun.  Definitely a highlight so far!

After the kayaking we came back to our awesome apartment for a swim.  We BBQed lunch by the pool and relaxed in the sun for the first time since Sydney.

We took some time writing in our journals and relaxing in the nice weather.

For dinner we made use of the BBQ again for dinner and then made our way out to the Carlos Sand Blow, just down the road.  This is a natural process where the wind brings up sand from the beach and makes the big sand hills that we are on.  This one named by Captain Cook 240 years ago, but they come and go.  The views on both sides of the blow to ocean and to the inland forests are amazing, and there was a large crowd there just to watch the sunset.
