Australian Slang Bingo

The kids asked me what language they speak in Australia, so being an oh-so-witty Dad, I said "Australian, of course".  They asked for some good Australian words so they could practice, and the only thing I could come up with on the spot was "Crikey!".

They asked me to use it in a sentence, so channeling my best (not so good) Steve Irwin, I exclaimed "Crikey!  The bloody great croc bit me arm off!!"

Now, of course I know that nobody would say that "down under" (they don't even say "down under"), so I was curious about what sayings are real and common, and which ones are holdovers from Crocodile Dundee, Simpsons and old Energizer commercials.

So we are going to try some Aussie Slang Bingo when we are down there to see what is real and what isn't.

Add some guesses in the comments if you think you know what some of theses are, and if you can think of any more, feel free to respond (especially if you are qualified).

Tech for the trip

Leaving on Tuesday for the trip, so starting to get a list of the tech we will bring on the trip.  I suspect that only 5% of this will be used, but better safe than sorry!

  • Canon 70D for still and 1080p movies
    • 70-300 mm IS USM lens
    • 28 mm prime lens
    • 18-55 mm kit lens
  • Canon PowerShot 3500 for easy handheld movies and stills
  • Al's GoPro Hero for waterproof or head-mounted HD movies
  • Kids two Asus MeMo tablets
  • My old phone, to use as a tablet for games or movies
  • various chargers
  • voltage adapter
  • USB hub for parallel charging
  • RAVPower FileHub for a wireless access point so people can all be sharing the same wifi access in a hotel or in a car
  • 128G thumb drive for backing up photos and movies as we go
  • A couple extra 32G microUSB cards just in case
  • Archos video player on the phones and tablets to play content off the RAVPower FileHub
  • Bluetooth keyboard so people can type easily on their phones or tablets
  • Headphones for everyone
  • Camera battery charger and extra batteries for phone, since they last less than a day if they are used a lot.
Now, what am I forgetting? :)

It works best in the water

Kids are very excited!  Wearing snorkels to test them out...

7 days to go!

Thought I'd set up a blog to see if we can capture some of our Australian trip.

Not sure how easy it will be to use or not, so bear with us as we figure it all out.

Very excited!  The Miedemas are leaving next Tuesday for Vancouver.  We will take a day to adjust a bit to the timezone change, and see some sights in Vancouver before we meet up with Grandma and fly out late (very late) on the 3rd to Sydney.
